Embezzlers of over 700million birr walk free

Information obtained from the Ethiopian Federal Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (FEACC) reveals that public officials that embezzled over 734,600,000 birr, although charged with clear evidences, walk without being convicted.
It has also been indicated that various other corruption crimes that have been charged with plenty of clear evidences since 2012 have not yet been convicted.
In the Benishangul Gumz region, a top government official has been charged for embezzling 94,300 birr from the higher education constriction fund but has not so far been given proper verdict. An illegal compensation payment of over 6million birr has been made by the rehabilitation project of the Arada Sub City in Addis Abeba. Three files of investigation have been completed and they have been charged in 2012 although no decision has been made so far.
Similarly, 12 and 34 million birr in the Ethiopian Commercial Bank (ECB), 14 million birr in the former Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation, 65, 300,000 birr from Sheba Steel Mills of the Tigray region, over 100million birr in a private steel factory in the Oromia region have been embezzled and lost through corruption respectively.
The unnecessary purchase of 2470 transformers by the Ethiopian Electric Corporation worth 248,900,000birr has been investigated and proven although no legal action has so far been taken.  Silver and bronze medals worth 4,700,000birr have been lost from the Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) and nothing has been done so far regarding it.

Likewise, a charge has been filed on the Kolfe Keranio Sub City for the giveaway of land area of 30,332 meters without lease. Staff members of the Ethiopian National Bank and traders have been charged for embezzling over 63million birr during the purchase of the Bank’s Gold.

Corruption charges and cases that have been presented to the court but have not received any judgement include compensation payment of over 5million 200thousand birr in Kirkos Sub City, embezzlement of drugs worth 1,700,000 birr from the Hawasa Brach of the  Drug Administration and Control Authority of Ethiopia, a bid for the purchase  cereals worth 100million birr from the Ethiopian Red Cross Association, and in general tax money collected from the public have been investigated and presented to the decision making body although no decision has been passed so far.

These figures are not inclusive of corruptions that took place in the year 2012. Corruptions that appeared in the last 22 years rule of the current regime and yet uninvestigated by the Commission are believed to amount over billions of dollars.
