Addis standard’s exclusive interview with Ana Gomes

Image
Ana Gomes is coordinator and spokesperson of the foreign affairs committee for her political group, the Social-Democrat. With 200 members the Social-Democrat is the second largest group within the European Parliament. For Ethiopia and Ethiopians though Ana Gomes is best remembered for her role as the leader of the EU election observers’ team during the 2005 crisis-induced general election in Ethiopia. She has had a troubled relationship with Ethiopia’s late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who she still calls “a dictator,” after she published her report in which wrote the election was massively rigged. Eight years later, Ana Gomes came to Ethiopia to participate in the just concluded 26 th ACP-EU parliamentary meeting. Her arrival in Addis Ababa caught many, who thought she would never be allowed to set foot in Ethiopia, by a surprise. Addis Standard’s deputy-editor-in-chief Tesfaye Ejigu met Ana Gomes during the

Highway riot contained

JEDDAH: MD AL-SULAMI Security forces arrested 20 Ethiopian rioters on the Makkah-Jeddah Expressway on Friday for throwing stones that damaged 14 cars and injured four Saudis. An eyewitness said police officers fired shots into the air to disperse the rioters and soon brought the situation under control. The Ethiopians were apparently rioting because they could not gain entry into the Shumaisi detention center, he said. “A large number of Ethiopians, who arrived in buses, moved onto the highway and tried to stop speeding cars. However, the highway security patrol closed the expressway at a safe distance from the detention center to prevent the situation from escalating. The troublemakers were confronted and taken into custody," a security source said. “The rioting started when a group of Ethiopians hurled stones at passing motorists and the security forces. The police opened fire into the air to bring the situation under control,” the eyewitness said. He said the Ethio

The crime of the village mercenary Woyane and the Kingdom of Saudi that finance it

November 27, 2013 by Teshome Debalke What can be said more than what my compatriots and the world over said about the shameful act of the ethnic Chiefdom of Woyane regime and the tribal Kingdom of Saudi in the suffering of Ethiopians. How an 18 th century ethnic mercenary at home and tribal Kingdom in Arabia that financed it inflect so much pain and suffering on our people in front of our eyes? We knew all along when the mercenary ethnic regime sold our people and nation in daylight. We witnessed our people being chased out of their country in every direction to end up in strange lands around the world. We watched when Woyane invites Arabian moguls and Chinese and Indians scavengers with the red carpet treatment in Sheraton Addis owned by the infamous Ethiopian-born Saudi investor to be handed our precious land pennies on the dollar. We were also distraught when our leaders and history tarnished by small time TPLF mercenary that sold it soul for petro dollars of Arab depots, on

Photoshopping the good doctor

Image
November 26, 2013 by Yilma Bekele According to Tigrai on line web site that published it the good Dr. is welcoming our deportees from Saudi Arabia. As you can see there are lots of problems with this assertion. It just looks like the people he is welcoming don’t seem to be aware of the presence of such a high ranking official, the future Prime Minister in their midst.  Tedros Addhanom seems to have landed from out of nowhere. Is it possible he was in charge of keeping the line moving in an orderly manner, if so does he moonlight as a security guard in his spare time? Where is the stick, normally Woyane security always carry a stick to whip citizens into compliance or maybe he is a humane guard since he is highly educated. Also what is with this scale discrepancy? I know our Tigrean warriors are big and strong but really do you think this picture takes that a little bit further? If you remember old Chinese propaganda posters always showed Chairman Mao bigger than life, is it possibl

Henok Semaegzer, Missing from Action and Misinforming the Public

Image
November 20, 2013 by Tedla Asfaw The job of journalist is to Report what he or she sees. Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia have been under attack for almost two weeks now.The Arab media is calling them “rioters”. The lynching, the chopping of victims and badly beaten can be seen on social medias. Women were gang raped and the families of victims were heard crying and ask for help. They were all in Saudi Arabia not from another planet. Henok Semaegzer yesterday on VOA was quoting the Saudi’s and tell the VOA listeners that “the killers are not Saudis and the crime is not in Saudi Arabia”. What a shame ??? The job of journalist is to have courage and report from the crime area than looking for an expert of “Middle East and Africa” from Columbia University in New York. If he reports from distance to do his research diligently. I am ashamed of VOA that has enough resource for not sending its journalists to Saudi to visit the victims in jails, “concentration camp” and those who are hiding in

Here, I would like to ask mr hailemariam which one voice is he talking about? the one voice of dictatorship and the killing of innocents, depriving peoples properties to make them homeless, or the one voice of running away from justice from the ICC?   Again ( He said, African media leaders and journalists have a key role in building the continent's image and changing it for the better .).How many journalists were wrongfully acused and jailed in Ethiopia? if he is expecting journalists to change the image of african continent for the better? then he has to releas those journalists and the political leaders been detained in his prisons?  The general idea is, to call the Afriacn journalists attention on free medias so that, the soo called African leaders in their various cou

Comment: Ethiopia today is reminiscent of apartheid South Africa, where anyone who questions the state is a terrorist    Zakes Mda in Cape Town theguardian.com , Tuesday 5 November 2013 16.47 GMT Eskinder Mega. Photograph: Pen International The award-winning Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega will turn 45 this month in Kaliti prison outside Addis Ababa whilst serving an 18-year sentence as a convicted terrorist. The government in Addis would have the world believe he is a reckless, even racist, agitator bent on violent revolution. Yet, a review of the evidence against him and his writings reveals a thoughtful and principled man whose only crime has been to urge, peacefully and publicly, Ethiopia 's rulers to deliver on their long broken promise of peaceful, democratic reform. "Democracy is so important to Ethiopia, because we need it to moderate the differences between civilization and civilization," Eskinder

New Defence Proclamation makes no change on its nepotistic structure

ESAT News   The new Defense Proclamation that was tabled for discussion for the members of the External Defence Security, Legal, Justice and Administration Standing Committees of the Ethiopian Parliament would make no change on the current nepotistic leadership structure of the Defense where 98% of the army officials come from a single ethnic group, it has been learnt. Officials of the Ethiopian Defense Forces on the other hand say the proclamation annuls the previous laws and promotes the Defense Force. Although the members of the Standing Committees had asked for changes regarding rank promotion, accommodation, the execution of death sentences, none of them had dared to question the complete dominance of the TPLF in the military structure, it was reported. Sources say the new Proclamation makes the Force a servant of one Party and contains nothing new that helps soldiers “who suffer in the desert and foreign lands”. Ethiopian opposition claims rampant abuse (Aljazeera)

November 1, 2013 Opposition party says more than 150 of its members have suffered abuse at hands of Ethiopian security officials. Negasso Gidada, the UDJ party chief, centre, has urged the government to stop abusing his party members [EPA] An opposition party has accused the Ethiopian government of beating, abducting and illegally detaining more than 150 of its members during July and September this year. In a 39-page report launched on Thursday, the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) detailed what it said were “gruesome rights violations” committed against its supporters and members. “One hundred and fifty members and supporters of the party have been subjected to severe beatings, illegal detentions and abductions by the police and security officials,” Negasso Gidada, the party chairman, told reporters. “We are asking the government to stop these human rights violations and take those responsible to justice,” said Negasso, who served as the country’s president from 1995
