Teachers’ Associations in the Amhara Region have said that they have already contributed their salaries to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GRED) and as they do not have the financial strength and cannot brave the high cost of living, they would only contribute when they could only.
The government had planned to restart slashing the salaries of civil servants for the Dam construction. However, more than half of the civil servants in regional offices sent letters to the Justice office, Labor and Social Affairs asking the following “liberate us by taking the bonds you have given us, take only 10% from our salaries and I cannot even eat please postpone it to next year”.
Other civil servants asked the money contributions they make to the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM), member of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), to be stopped as they cannot afford to fulfill their basic needs and cater to the needs of their children. Government officials are inducing the employees to agree to contribute arguing “everyone is in a difficult situation”.
Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalgn recently said that the public’s financial contribution to the Dam is minimal and the government will cover the major share. However, it is to be recalled that the late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi had said when he was introducing the plans of the construction of the Dam that it will be fully built by the help of Ethiopians.
