UN experts urge Ethiopia to halt violent crackdown on Oromia protesters, ensure accountability for abuses GENEVA (21 January 2016) – A group of United Nations human rights experts* today called on the Ethiopian authorities to end the ongoing crackdown on peaceful protests by the country’s security forces, who have reportedly killed more than 140 demonstrators and arrested scores more in the past nine weeks. “The sheer number of people killed and arrested suggests that the Government of Ethiopia views the citizens as a hindrance, rather than a partner,” the independent experts said, while also expressing deep concern about allegations of enforced disappearances of several protesters.   ኢትዮጵያ አምባገነንነትን እንቢ ትበል！！！ ሁለት ወራት ባልሞላ ጊዜ ውስጥ በኦሮሚያ ውስጥ ብቻ ከ150 በላይ ዜጎች ሕይወታቸውን አጥተዋል፤ በአማራ፣ በጋምቤላና በሶማሌ ቁጥራቸው የማይታወቅ በርካታ ወገኖቻችን ተገድለዋል፤ በሌሎችም ክልሎች ወገኖቻችን እየተገደሉ ነው። ከዚህም በተጨማሪ በሺዎች የሚቆጠሩ ዜጎች ተደብድበዋል፤ ታስረዋል። የህወሓት አገዛዝ ዜጎች መግደል፣ መደብደብና ማሰር መደበኛ ሥራው አድርጎታል። በተለይ በኦሮሚያ ክልል እየቀጠለ ያለው ሕዝባዊ እምቢተኝነት ትልቅ ትምህርት የሚወሰድበት እና ይበልጥ ውጤታማ እንዲሆን የሁላችንም ተሳትፎ የሚሻ ነው። ሕዝባዊ እምቢተኝነቱ በክልሉ ውስጥ የሚገኙ ትናንሽ የገጠር ከተሞችን ሳይቀር ያዳረሰ መሆኑ የበርካታ ሕዝብ ስሜትንና ጥቅምን የሚነካ አጀንዳ በፍጥነት እንደሚሰራጭና ሕዝብን እንደሚያደራጅ አመላካች ነው። ከዚህ ሕዝባዊ ትግል በርካታ ድሎች የተገኙ ቢሆኑም ሁለቱ መሠረታዊ በመሆናቸው አጽንዖት ሊሰጣቸው ይገባል። አንደኛ በአለፉት ሁለት ወራት በኦሮሚያ የተቀጣጠለው ሕዝባዊ እምቢተኝነት የኢትዮጵያን ማኅበረሰብ አቀራርቧል። ጉዳዩ በቀጥታ የሚመለከተው ሕዝብ ያልመከረበት የአዲስ አበባ ማስተር ፕላን መቃወም ፍትሃዊ መሆኑ በሰላማዊም ሆነ በአመፅ መንገድ የህወሓትን አገዛዝ መታገል የመረጡ የዲሞክራሲ ኃይሎችን በሙሉ ያስማማ፤ በኦሮሞና በአማራ ማኅበረሰብ መካከል መልካም የሆነ መግባባትን የፈጠረ መሆኑ ትልቅ ድል ነው። ይህ ማለት ግን አፍራሽ ጽንፈኛ አስተያየቶች ከወዲህም ከወዲያም መወርወራቸው ቀረ ማለት አይደለም፤ ያም ሆኖ ግን በሕዝቡና በፓለቲካ ልሂቃኑ መካከል ያለው መናበብ ከቀድሞው ...

The seasonal rains that usually fall between June and September did not arrive, and now, with the ‘dry season’ here the already severe situation can only deteriorate. According to the UN, Ethiopia “is experiencing its worst drought in 30 years;” in some areas the poorest, most vulnerable infants are already dying at a rate of two per day. Around “350,000 children are in need of treatment for severe acute malnutrition,” UNICEF relates, and up to 8.2 million people (out of a population of 95 million) urgently require relief assistance.
